How to Get Leaves and Other Debris Out of a Pool Cover

Installing a pool cover is arguably the best way to keep your pool free of dirt, leaves, twigs, and other debris. However, to get the most out of your pool cover, you must carefully and diligently maintain it. Poor maintenance may lead to rips and tears, allowing debris into your pool. For instance, trees shed their leaves during fall, and most homeowners trim their yards and fences in preparation for winter. Depending on the pool’s location, many falling leaves and yard trimmings may land on your pool cover and threaten its integrity.

Fortunately, we are here to help. In this post, we’ve compiled a list of tools that will help you remove the debris:

Pool Brush

A pool brush is ideal for cleaning the pool surfaces and cover. If you have a pool brush, use it to push the debris to one side of the cover, then scoop it up. Then, pass the brush again across the cover to remove any remaining debris. While at it, be gentle and avoid pressing the brush too firmly into the cover since the bristles can cause punctures.

Leaf Blower

Leaf blowers are effective at removing leaves in backyards and versatile enough to do a good shift on your pool cover. All you need to do is turn the blower on and run it across the cover’s surface. After that, collect the leaves to prevent them from blowing back onto the pool cover. Ideally, it would be best if you only used the leaf blower on dry leaves, as most blowers are not as effective when used on wet leaves.

Leaf Catcher

Leaf catchers are specifically designed to trap leaves. Consider installing one on top of your pool cover to make your work easier. The device will capture most leaves before landing on the pool cover. There are different types and designs of leaf catchers, but the best ones are made of thin mesh. These are not only good at trapping leaves but also help to prevent mold and mildew since they are relatively permeable. To have a great experience, always empty your leaf catcher once it gets full. Moreover, follow the user manual or contact the manufacturer to ensure it is installed correctly.
